A River Runs Through It

This is one of two paintings I will be submitting to "For the love of the Metolius" at Clearwater Gallery.  The openng will be February 16th.  The gallery is in Sisters, Oregon.
Clearwater Gallery will partner with The Friends of the Metolius to:
• Raise community awareness and appreciation for the ongoing restorative efforts of organizations to keep the Metolius River pristine.
• Host a non-juried community art show whose theme and subject matter is the Metolius River
• Provide a mid-winter celebratory event honoring the River and those who care for it

This river is truely one of the gems of Central Oregon and it is quite a challenge trying to capture that pristine beauty on canvas. (or linen as the case is)

Another Beautiful COLD Winter Day in Central Oregon

Winter is my studio time...time when I can go through all my photo reference materials and concentrate on larger paintings. This is another in my mountain series. These mountain paintings and the motel paintings will be the focus of my March show at Tumalo Art Co., in the Mill District in Bend, Oregon.
(Now is also the time for me to go through all my available paintings and find the ones for the HUGE sale at Tumalo on February 16th. The winter months do help me get organized...but I sure could use a little heat.

Their Roots Run Deep

Again this year I will be submitting a painting for My Own Two Hands, the Sisters
Americana Project, an educational outreach program of Sisters Folk
Festival, has made a positive impact on thousands of students and
a tremendous contribution to the community of Sisters and Central
Oregon.
Artists get asked frequently to donate art work to various causes. But this one is really important to me because it focuses on children and the arts. Also, because it goes to a community that really is behind kids, all kids, and their unique and individual needs. With so few government $'s going to the arts this is one way to really support something that has been very important in my life.
This year's theme is "Deep Roots," and how appropriate, I am in the middle of a series on Aspen Trees (and some birch trees, too)...and as many of us know, Aspens have some of the most complex root systems around....how appropriate for a community that really does have roots that extend to everyone.

I'm In the Trees

With a high of 30 degrees and a low of 13 I am up in the studio trying to create some warmth through capturing last fall's autumn rays filtered through Aspen trees near Black Butte.
I am really feeling the need for some plein air painting, however...winter is my busy large format painting time, but when the weather gets a little less challenging I will be able to go out and refuel my relationship with sky and space and the remote places I love. I admire those hardy souls who stand knee deep in snow and paint...not me! (I will probably finish this 40x40 tomorrow and put it in my available inventory.)

"Power Painting"---getting ready for shows!

I have been really up in the studio a lot now that the holidays are over. This little adobe motel will be part of my series Mountains and Motels, from the Majestic to the Mundane. That will open in March at Tumalo Art Co in Bend. However in February, Tumalo will have its huge blow out sale (February 16th, 9-3) and I really need to spend some time in my archives getting work ready for that!
I will be posting sample work for that huge show sometime in very early February.

Too Busy to Blog

This painting is for a show later this year...it is 90% done. But in addition to several scheduled shows I have been spending lots of time gathering work for a huge blow out sale on February 16th ..."The Best Fine Art Show Ever"--to be held across the street from Tumalo Art Co. in Bend. For the second year most of the artists at Tumalo will be offering works at huge discounts for one day only. This is one way for artists to make room in their studios.
I will be posting examples as I make my decisions about what to include in this sale.

Drama Above the Sisters

Last year at the Sisters Music Festival the sky above the Three Sisters' Mountains was amazing. It was twilight and it seemed that the skies wanted to echo the drama of the music. I took a photo....this type of scene does not wait for plein air...and now in the dead of winter I painted that memorable scene.

This will be one of the paintings featured at my show at Tumalo Art Co. in March

From Majestic Mountains to the Mundane

One Room or Two?

In addition to painting a very majestic mountain today I worked on this little painting of an abandoned motel...for my upcoming (March) show, focusing on Mountains and Motels. I just love the juxtaposition of the beautiful and the tawdry...these sad little abandoned places that were so stylish in their time. Unlike the mountains that never lose their beauty, these little guys fade fast.

Starting the New Year off Right!

Sunrise (Mt. Jefferson)

I love to paint, so on the first day 0f 2013 what better to do than paint Mt. Jefferson. I can see it from my kitchen window, however, right now it is completely covered with snow. I actually prefer it when some of the structure is showing...sort of seeing the bones of the mountain. This is one in the series of paintings I will be showing at Tumalo Art Co. in March.
